OPEN GOLF
Open Golf Returns To Sandwich

The British Open will be staged at Royal St George's, Sandwich, Kent in 2011. The Open was last held here in 2003 and was a massive success not only for local business but residents as well.

When Ben Curtis lifted the Claret Jug he was renting a local cottage a few miles from the course. Ben would have enjoyed a special pass to get him onto the course each day, in 2011 like 2003 there will be massive park and ride operation all around Sandwich opening up rent opportunities for local property owners and offering short drive access to the worlds greatest golf experience

A massive multi million pound cash boost, visitors from around the globe, international media attention and the top golfers in the world are being given a big open welcome with news that the Open Golf Tournament is returning to Sandwich. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club announced this autumn that the Open is being held at Royal St George’s in July 2011.

This follows the success of the Open in Sandwich in 2003 and follows ongoing work by DDC and key partners. It is being greeted as a fantastic opportunity to welcome world-leading sport back to the area and to promote Kent and East Kent on an international stage. It was estimated that the 2003 Open was watched by a global TV audience of almost half a billion. Studies estimate that the 2011 competition will generate £50-70m for the economy.

This major news confirms East Kent as an international golfing destination. It also comes as Kent prepares for the London Olympic Games in five years time, and follows the launch of the Kent Strategy for the 2012 Games. This also follows the Archery World Cup in Dover in 2007.
